Hmm, what is this? I’m skeptical.

Introduce all new things slowly and praise

This applies to everything new!

  • Grooming Supplies: Nail Clipper or Buffer, Brush, Toothbrush & Toothpaste, Blowdryer

  • Water Experiences: Bath Time, Going in Open Water

  • Accessories and Clothing: Collar, Harness, Leash, Bandana, Raincoat, Jacket, Shoes

  • And everything else that might be foreign to them!

Don’t do the following:

  • Get upset or yell - they will only be scared and dislike it even more

  • Force them to like something - not all dogs like to swim, or wear bandanas

Do follow these steps (non bath):

  1. Show dog new item - harness, nail clippers, etc.

  2. Tell dog to “touch” any new thing to show its not a threat

  3. Praise dog when it shows interest, meaning smelling, touching, etc using excitement, treats, or toys

  4. Start advancing to the next activity you want to the dog to do, such as putting the harness on or clipping only one nail. Only do this when your dog is okay with the item (not barking or growling)

  5. Continue to praise each advancement!

If your dog hates water, here are some tips to get them used to it:

  • Bring your dog to a lake, or put together a baby pool, so they can jump in and out and have fun

  • Stick a lick mat on the side of your tub so your dog can be focused on licking, as supposed to fighting bath time

  • Use high-value treats to lure dog into the bath, so they will enjoy it more

Give me treats and time - better chances of me liking it!
