I’m moving in. Is my home ready?

Our recommendations to prepare your home (Indoor Camera, Play Pen, and Gates)

It is important to puppy proof your home, and to be able to control where your pup goes and doesn’t go. We recommend doing these 2 things - puppy proofing and purchasing an indoor camera.

(1) Puppy Proofing

  • Remove access to wires, shoes, trinkets, or anything you don’t want their sharp teeth getting a hold of

  • Set up a play pen to limit the area your pup has access to. We used Midwest Play Pen - 36in. It works both indoors and out, and collapses easy.

    • This starts out as their play and sleep area. Their crate should be in here, along with toys, food, and water. Similar to crate training, you want to get your puppy to like the play pen - spend some time in it with them and make it fun!

    • Accidents are limited to your play pen area (fewer chances of catching an accident hours later since you didn’t notice)

    • Purchase a tall play pen for your pup, so they are not able to climb out of it.

  • Block off sections you don’t want your pup accessing. We used Regalo 56-Inch Extra WideSpan Walk Through Baby Gate. It works well, and came in an extra wide setting which we needed for our kitchen.

    • If you cook a lot, or have small children, then you should have a baby gate. There are a number of things your dog shouldn’t eat, and will get sick from (see human foods your dog should and should not eat here). If you have small children, then there might be small toys that your dog can easily chew on and swallow, and cause intestinal damage.

    • Teaches your dog some boundaries - our pup no longer enters the kitchen, even if the gate is open. He knows he is not supposed to go in there.

(2) Why have indoor cameras?

  • Crate training - keep an eye on your dog without you being in the room. This way you know when they stop barking, so you can return

  • Safety & Anxiety - allows you to keep an eye on your dog when you are away, whether your dog is in the crate or roaming around

If you only want to spy on your dog, this is good enough for the task!

Pros:

  • Reliable (great night vision)

  • Very low cost ($26 at time of posting)

  • Does the job of watching your dog

  • Detects movement and sound (not barking though)

Cons:

  • Very light, cheaply made

  • Require additional purchase of MicroSD Card Storage if you want to see past activity (roughly $10)

  • Activity zone cannot be adjusted outside the rectangular shape

 Happy spying!
