“Nap time? I’m not tired (yet).”
Dog, you need to calm down
How to tire out your puppy
Common reasons why you might want them to be tired.
Bed time: You want your dog to be tired enough to go to sleep. A puppy or dog with high energy will not be able to sleep in a timely manner, causing the parents to stay up longer.
Grooming: It might be time for a bath, brushing, or nail cutting. These activities are much easier when they have less energy to refuse.
Post Surgery Recovery: After surgeries, dogs are often not allowed to move around as much. They cannot go for long walks, or play with other dogs.
Quiet Time: When they are calm or tired, you can get time to read, cook, or take a nap with them.
Ways to Calm Down your Pup or Dog
A few methods to exhaust your dog. If your dog doesn’t like other dogs, or can’t do tricks, there is something for every dog!
Dog Park & Puppy Play Dates
Have your dog run around with some other dogs or pups. This allows them to burn off some energy while socializing!
Fetch
Throw some toys around, and make them run a round a bit! We got Brioche to fetch us some wine. If only he could pour some!
Brain Stimulation Toys
Put a few treats or crumbs in a toy where they have to use their brain to get them out. Trainers say 15 minutes of this is more effective than 30 minutes of puppy play dates!
Hide & Seek
Show your dog a treat or toy, and hide it! Start with just hiding it a few feet away. If your dog knows “stay” you can also hide yourself!
Long Walks & Runs
Find a trail near you, or go for a walk or run around the neighborhood. The steeper the incline, the more tired your dog will be!
Push-Ups
Does your dog know “sit” and “down” ?
You can have your dog alternate between the two. Just like humans, this can be quite exhausting!
