Hmm, did you say foster?

All the details you need for fostering a dog

What is fostering?

  • Bringing a homeless pet from a shelter or rescue group into your home

  • Goal is to nurture the dog until they can be placed in a permanent home

Why should I foster?

  • Transform a scared dog into a pet, or teach an energetic dog some manners

  • Socialize a dog with people and kids prior to joining their furever home - sometimes they need it!

  • You want to find a friend for your current dog

  • Free up space in a shelter to house more dogs

  • Don’t want the long-term responsibility of a dog

  • Figure out if dog ownership is a right choice for you

Should I foster?

If you answer yes to all these questions, check it out!

  • Does your schedule allow for you to have and train a dog?

  • Do your roommates or family want a dog?

  • Do you have enough space for a dog?

  • Are you willing to spend extra money on a dog?

  • Are you okay with giving up the dog after falling in love? Some places don’t allow you to keep your foster dog, while others do!

  • Does your apartment or landlord allow pets?

If reading this intimidates you from dogs, sorry! But, maybe you can check out kittens or cats! They are in need of homes too :)

Where can I foster?

What questions to ask?

  • Where did the dog come from? Any trauma or abuse? What is the temperament?

  • How long has the dog been in the shelter or homeless?

  • How old is the dog? Does it requirement medications or a special diet? You may not be comfortable giving medication.

  • Is the dog house trained? Crate trained?

  • Does the dog like people, kids, or other animals?

  • What if we want to adopt the dog ourself?

  • Do we need to bring the dog to any events?

  • Who arranges visits with potential adopters?

  • What do I do if we no longer are able to foster the dog?

  • What is the financial commitment? Who pays for vet, dog food, and pet supplies?

  • Is there a minimum time we are expected to foster the dog?

What should I expect?

  • Applications are involved

  • Home and background checks

  • You most likely cannot choose the breed / dog to foster. If you can choose, act fast because it might get swooped up.

Thanks for fostering - hope it wasn’t traumatizing and you get a pup or dog of your own one day!
